The French Centre for Economic, Law and Social Studies in Sudan (CEDEJ Khartoum), is pleased to invite applications for eight grants to support the work of Sudanese scholars and graduate students (PhD and Master students). 

• Four general research grants to conduct research on Sudan and the Sudanese diaspora in the fields of social sciences and humanities;
• Four thematic research grants to explore alternative sources for the writing of Sudanese history.
  From the eruption of the Sudanese conflict in 2023, and more broadly the political upheavals observed since December 2018, access to state-sponsored archival funds have become more and more precarious, if not impossible. Besides, the general collapse of Sudanese institutions ensured that few records are currently being kept. With that in mind, what other sources could be mobilized to write Sudan’s history and what kind of history could be then developed? The CEDEJ Khartoum encourages applicants to investigate as wide an array of documents as possible, may they be private or public, written, oral or pictorial, contemporary or ancient.

Eligibility and Terms

These grants are intented for Sudanese researchers who are based in Sudan or in Egypt or planning to do empirical fieldwork or a research stay in Egypt. Applicants who currently do not have a scholarship with CEDEJ-Khartoum will be given priority.

The amount for each grant is set at 1 000 euros. The grant beneficiary will receive 50% of the grant upon signing the grant contract. He will receive the remaining payment when the final report is submitted to the CEDEJ Khartoum coordinator – Anaël POUSSIER – and after validation by the scientific committee.
Grantees will become Associated researchers at CEDEJ Khartoum for one year. Grants offered are not subject to taxes, and do not include open rights to social security. They are awarded as contributions towards actual research costs.

Requirements

Successful applicants will be expected to write a blog piece from 1 000 to 1 500 words by the 31^st of December, 2026 and present their research at a CEDEJ-Khartoum seminar.

The application (in French, English, or Arabic) must include:

• a complete CV (1 page maximum)
• a research proposal (1 page maximum) that will describe the research question, the context, the methodology, and the feasibility of the project.

The application will be examined by a selection committee in early September 2026 which will consider the scientific interest and relevance of the project, as well as the applicant’s ability to realize it.
