Sudanese Relocation Across Cairo, Alexandria and Aswan. With Fatima Abdalla Al-Kinani (Cairo, Sept. 23, 2026)

· Title: Choiceless Choices: Sudanese Relocation Across Cairo, Alexandria, and Aswan
· Speaker: Fatima Abdalla Al-Kinani (HCSR)

The presentation compares the experiences of displaced Sudanese in Cairo, Alexandria, and Aswan, focusing on housing, employment, mobility, access to food and aid, social obligations, and cultural safety through a political-economic and intersectional feminist lens.

Since the outbreak of war in Sudan, Egypt has received large numbers of displaced people, most without access to a fully institutionalized asylum system. This presentation examines how Sudanese displaced persons choose where to live in
Egypt as a forced response to new conditions produced by displacement itself, other than a free geographic preference.
Using a political-economic and intersectional feminist lens, the paper compares the situations of Sudanese residents in three major cities: Cairo, Alexandria, and Aswan. It looks at housing, employment, transportation, food access, remittances
and aid, social obligations, and cultural safety.

Fatima Abdalla Al-Kinani is a Sudanese writer and researcher working on migration, displacement, urban space, and memory. She holds an LLB in Law from Cairo University. Her research draws on oral history, anthropology, and urban
studies, applying a political-economic and intersectional feminist lens to examine the lived experiences of displaced and marginalized communities. She is a fellow researcher at the Human and the City for Social Research (HCSR), co-authoring
reports and authoring articles on Sudanese displacement in Egypt, including a study on the socioeconomic vulnerabilities faced by Sudanese women in Alexandria, and the forthcoming comparative article A Tale of Three Cities.
