The ongoing war in Sudan, which began in April 2023, has profoundly reshaped the country’s landscapes and livelihoods, driving large-scale displacement, land abandonment, and food insecurity. This seminar examines how conflict has reshaped land use, displaced communities, and disrupted livelihoods, using a spatial and social lens. Farmlands have been left fallow, urban areas have expanded due to mass migration, and deforestation has increased as communities struggle to access resources. Restricted pastoralist mobility has intensified competition over land and water, exacerbating tensions between farmers and herders. With over 14 million displaced and 20 million facing food shortages, the humanitarian crisis is severe. Addressing these challenges requires conflict-sensitive land governance, sustainable land use management, and livelihood restoration to mitigate displacement, environmental degradation, and food insecurity while supporting long-term peace and resilience.
