sudanahye is the Sudanese-Armenian Heritage Project, a multimedia research project documenting the history of the Sudanese-Armenian community. There has been a continuous Armenian presence in Sudan from the late 1800s, as a minority Christian community who thrived the commercial world of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. Following the Genocide of the Armenians at the hands of the Ottoman Empire beginning in 1915, the community grew and over the next few decades became part of the fabric of Khartoum and Omdurman society, securing an enviable economic position and using it to fund community institutions such as a school, church and club. At independence in 1956 the community numbered between 800- 1000 Armenians, was centred in Khartoum and Omdurman but with a small presence in towns and cities all across Sudan. The history of Armenians in Sudan which has been uncovered by sudanahye through archival research, digitisation of photos, development of an oral history archive and more, provides a new angle with which to view Sudanese history. This presentation will look specifically at what Sudanese-Armenian history can tell us about the colonial legacy touching on themes of race, class and identity in Sudan in the context of the Armenians and other minority communities.
