The Seminar : “Debts of Return: Notes on the Political Economy of Sudanese Migrants’ Return from Lebanon” will be held at CEDEJ Thursday the 19th of auguste from 12h30 to 14h30.
Anna Simone Reumert, PhD Candidate in Anthropology at Columbia University will present a seminar on Thursday the 19th. of auguste from 12h30 to 14h30.
This presentation examines the political significance and gender-relational dynamics of migrants’ return to post-revolution Sudan in 2020-21. Through fieldwork and social mapping of young male Sudanese migrants’ return from a crisis-ridden Lebanon to Khartoum and Kordofan, I examine how
return sparked an intergenerational and ideological struggle over the migrant-returnee’s identity in a changed Sudan. I argue that these migrants returned not only indebted from Lebanon, but also to a debt of both material, social and political significance, materialized through obligations that had been withheld in expat life, and which they are expected to pay back by tending to their families’ land. The presentation documents aspects of the migrant returnees’ struggle to repay this debt.
