CfP: “Young Africans on the Move: Exploring Intra- and Inter-continental Migration Processes and Dynamics”

A hybrid conference will be held from 28 to 30 November 2023 at the Ahfad University for Women, Omdurman (Sudan,), and online.

The Regional Institute of Gender, Diversity, Peace, and Rights (RIGDPR) at Ahfad University for Women and the European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR) are jointly organizing a hybrid conference with the aim of developing a wider understanding of young Africans’ migration, including dimensions of intersectionality and gender.

Africa has the youngest population worldwide, and it is growing. Some of these youths are active in migratory processes to destinations within and beyond the continent. Contrary to dominant perspectives, the majority of these movements are intra-country and intra-region.

The conference is intended to provide a platform for junior and senior researchers and to contribute to knowledge production on African migration in a critical, (self)reflexive and post-colonial mode.

Potential topics for papers and posters

  1. Forms and sources of knowledge on African migration – challenging the discursive field (e.g. by art-based research, inclusive participatory research, non-academic forms of knowledge, philosophical approaches)
  2. African migration dynamics, patterns, and routes, experiences and challenges, within and beyond the continent.
  3. Young Africans’ decision-making processes regarding migration
  4. Explorations on materiality and imaginations in the process of African migration
  5. Processes of trafficking of young Africans
  6. Challenging the categories: e.g. forced and voluntary/opportunity-seeking migration, economic migration, environmental migration
  7. (Self)Representation of migrant and diasporic young Africans
  8. Social networks, incl. digital networks in migration
  9. Gender relations (incl. gender-based violence): African migration and African diasporas
  10. Patterns of resilience and coping strategies of young African migrants
  11. Citizenship, justice, rights, and the migration of young Africans.
  12. Intra- and intercontinental policies and legal frameworks of African migration – searching for best practice tools.

Types of participation

The call for abstracts is open to everyone. A limited number of travel grants for paper presenters is available; preference will be given to junior scholars from the Global South.
