CEDEJ Khartoum Seminar Series at CEDEJ Cairo
Waters and lands under siege Reflecting on Sudanese mega-irrigation projects before and after the 15th of April
Date: 21th of February
Time: 11am
Speakers: Mariasole Pepa, Eltaib Saeed Ganawa, Shibab Eldin Osman and Andrea Pase*
The seminar sets one’s sights on providing a “picture” of the transformation in Sudanese mega-irrigation projects just before the 15th of April drawing from extensive fieldwork conducted in February and March 2023. In particular, it seeks to illuminate the territorial impacts of mega-project such as the Gezira Scheme and Kenana, alongside the expansion of pivot irrigation systems in River Nile State. Furthermore, the seminar aims to foster a collaborative dialogue to reflect on the multiple ways in which irrigation spaces have been affected by the war.
**Discussants are geographers from the University of Khartoum and Padua University, collaborating within the framework of the AtlaSahel project. This research initiative is dedicated to examine, analyze and interrogate the territorial dynamics generated by irrigation development projects along the Sahel with a particular focus on Sudan.
