Breaking the Cycle: Understanding and Addressing the Interplay of Poor Governance, Underdevelopment, and Conflict in Sudan

Speaker: Dr. Abdul Hameed Elias Suliman (University of Khartoum)

Abstract:

Sudan has faced persistent challenges with poor governance, underdevelopment, and recurring armed conflicts since its independence. The seminar examined the intricate relationships between these interlinked issues. Using a mixed-methods approach, it investigates specific governance flaws, such as weak state institutions, corruption, lack of service provision, and human rights violations, that have contributed to the country’s underdevelopment. It assesses how these governance deficiencies have impacted effective resource management, economic growth, and the delivery of essential public services. The research also explores how the economic consequences of conflict, including loss of oil revenue, destruction of infrastructure, and forced displacement, has further exacerbated underdevelopment and fueled the recurrence of violence.

Education Continuity Challenges Faced by Sudanese Forced Migrants: A Study in Cairo, Egypt

Speaker: Randa Hamza Ibrahim Gindeel (Ahfad University for Women)

Abstract:

This study focuses on the schooling status of Sudanese children who arrived in Cairo after the April 15, 2023, war, aiming to address four key questions: (a) socio-economic characteristics of forced migrant parents contributing to children’s education, (b) number of children per family continuing basic education, (c) obstacles and challenges faced by parents, and (d) strategies employed by parents. Conducted in Nasr City, Cairo. Challenges faced by forced migrant parents include limited social capital, lack of support and guidance, cultural differences, academic difficulties, delays in accessing suitable schools, distance to educational institutions, and uncertainty regarding the future of Sudanese schools. This study underscores the importance of understanding alternative approaches used by Sudanese forced migrants in different locations to support education continuity for their children. By exploring the socio-economic factors, enrollment patterns, obstacles, and strategies employed by parents, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the complexities surrounding education continuity for Sudanese forced migrants in Cairo, Egypt.

Abstract:

Sudan’s agricultural sector contributes significantly to the country’s GDP and employs a large labor force. The April 15 war in Sudan devastated the agricultural sector, causing food shortages. This study aims to assess the impact of the 15th April War on food security in Sudan by examining the internal and external factors affecting the agriculture value chain and developing resilience and recovery strategies. The study uses primary and secondary data, including interviews with key informants in the agricultural sector and relevant reports. The SWOT analysis method is used to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in the agricultural chain. The findings highlight the strengths and weaknesses of the current food security system in Sudan and suggest ways to harness strengths and opportunities while mitigating weaknesses and threats. The study concluded the 15th April War had significant consequences for Sudan’s agricultural sector and food security. Understanding the impacts on agricultural value chains and coping and rehabilitation strategies are essential to improve the impact on food availability, price stability, and overall food security in Sudan.
