Faysal, Last Stop” is a project that draws from collective critical cartography and mapping  as a tool to explore migratory trajectories and highlight subaltern voices, offering counter-narratives that reveal the embodied spatial relations of Sudanese women, which are often rendered invisible in hegemonic representations. While Sudanese have settled in various districts depending on pre-war connections to Egypt and their social backgrounds, a significant number have moved to Faysal where there is a high concentration of migrants from diverse nationalities.Faysal is undergoing transformations as Sudanese redefine the urban landscape, forming “new geographies of space-making” in Cairo. As a lived and evolving space Faysal offers valuable insights into how communities constantly redefine spatial and social relations.

Situated at the intersection of critical geography and migration studies, this project focuses on a group of 13 Sudanese women, aged 20-40, who settled in Faysal after the war. These women participated in collective mapping, zine making and sound workshops. Everyday experiences, frequently excluded from dominant narratives, come to the forefront through this process.

The exhibition aims to center these counter-maps of Faysal and of the journey from Sudan to Cairo created by the Sudanese women who navigate and negotiate this neighborhood, as well as how emotionally and sensorially they cope and embody such a cramped yet familiar space in an attempt to find a sense of home and safety.
