Abstract:
Artisan and small-scale gold-mining in Sudan has become an alternative path to continue relieving Sudan’s treasury with hard currency that has already badly diminished by separation of oil-rich South Sudan in July 2011. In 2012, due to the anticipated loss of oil accounting for substantial contribution to the county’s economy; 75% of the oil export, gold sector became an important source of hard currency. As it was surrounded with great obscurity, a heated debate transpired on gold has been raging, yet with scant and rudimentary literature of scholarly works. The main argument is that; gold-revenue is the main driver for the escalating current war in the country. Lords of war taking advantages of the fragile security state in the country have been engaged in the gold’s business via military and “malitiazation” to consolidate grip on power. This article aims at tracing the gold’s business under siege of war’s-lords in the triangle-zone in South Kordofan State.
