CEDEJ Khartoum: Seminar on Sudan

Seminar 01: Time of Disappointment

Khartoum’s Revolutionary movement resisting the 2021 Military Coup d’Etat in Sudan

Date: Wednesday February 19th, 2025
Time: 12pm
Speakers: Saskia Jaschek ( University of Bayreuth)

Abstract

The presentation engages with project Sudan’s revolutionary movement and its resistance to the 2021 military coup d’état it and its counterrevolutionary aftermath. Based on one year of ethnographic research in Khartoum between October 2021 and February 2023, the project deals with what the revolutionaries called the ‘disappointment time,’ i.e., an intense time of social and political conflict, where a feeling of defeat gradually replaced the enthusiasm to fight. By examining the change in atmospheres and sentiments, the dissertation investigates the unfolding of violence and resistance under the changing socio-politico-economic conditions of a military coup d’état. It does so by centering on the affective states emerging through counteraction and analyzes their linkages to the evolvement and change of resistant subjectivities and practices.

Seminar 02: Resisting Hegemonies: The Politics of Queerness in Sudan – Identity, Resistance, and
Sociopolitical Dynamics

Date: Wednesday February 19th, 2025
Time: 12am
Speakers: Samah Khalaf Allah (University of Bayreuth)

Abstract

This presentation introduces my PhD project, which examines the intersection of queer identities and socio-political hegemonies in Sudan, particularly in the context of the 2018-2019 revolution. It investigates how queer identities have been historically (re)negotiated amid political, religious, and societal transformations, reconstructing marginalized narratives of resistance. Grounded in Afrofeminism, this research prioritizes theorizing from lived experiences rather than imposing preexisting theories. Employing ethnographic and autoethnographic methods, the study examines how shifting political regimes, religious doctrines, and societal expectations have shaped queer identities over time. Cultural expressions such as “Mariq/Marga” are analyzed as derogatory labels and symbols of resistance, illustrating how identity reclamation serves as an act of defiance. By integrating these themes, this research provides a critical intervention in discussions on intersectionality and queerness in postcolonial Sudan, emphasizing the role of community-driven perspectives in challenging socio-political hegemonies and contributing to broader discourse in African studies.
