CEDEJ K and the CMI
The collaboration between the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI) and CEDEJ Khartoum began in June 2024 and has since entered a phase of consolidation and expansion. With CEDEJ Khartoum and the majority of Sudanese researchers affiliated with CMI now based in Cairo due to the war, the collaboration has deepened, fostering enhanced academic engagement and more effective coordination between the concerned parties.
CEDEJ Khartoum serves as the collaborator for this project, playing a central role in facilitating research activities, scholarly exchanges, and organization of academic events. The project addresses different pressing and relevant challenges facing Sudan, and includes a focus on the impact of war on higher education.
From December 5-6, 2024, CEDEJ Khartoum, in collaboration with the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI) and University of Khartoum organized a workshop at the American University in Cairo. The workshop, titled Higher Education in Sudan: Current Challenges and Recovery Prospects in Postwar Period, brought together scholars, researchers, and educators to discuss the state of higher education in Sudan in the aftermath of the war. Over the two days, participants explored key challenges faced by Sudanese institutions of higher learning, including infrastructural damage, shifting educational policies, and the impact of ongoing socio-political upheaval. The workshop also focused on recovery prospects, discussing how universities and academic communities can contribute to Sudan’s rebuilding efforts by fostering critical thought, research, and academic collaboration.
This collaboration contributed to the production and dissemination of critical knowledge on Sudan, reinforcing academic networks and fostering research on Sudan’s most urgent socio-political issues. The project prioritizes the inclusion of University staff from marginalized regions and historically underrepresented groups, particularly women and youth, in Sudan. CEDEJ Khartoum is proud to serve as a key facilitator in this important initiative, committed to supporting meaningful academic engagement and knowledge production on Sudan.
