The situation of Sudanese refugees on the Chad-Sudan border: Is a return possible?

The situation of Sudanese refugees on the Chad-Sudan border: Is a return possible?

Date: Wednesday May 7th, 2025
Time: 4pm
Speakers: Fouad IBRAHIM DAOUD (University of Ottawa)

The question of refugee and IDP return has resurfaced since the outbreak of war in April 2023. While this issue is not new—especially in conflict-affected areas like Darfur—it has become more urgent. In many parts of Sudan, return may be possible once fighting subsides. In Darfur, however, land disputes, the arrival of new settlers, and long-standing demographic policies remain major obstacles. A new generation of refugees now faces the same fate as those displaced in earlier conflicts—many of whom no longer see return as a viable option. The seminar will address the complexities surrounding return, with a focus on Darfur, and explore the social, political, and demographic factors shaping current displacement.
